Special Services

The Point Pleasant Borough School District is pleased to offer a full continuum of services to support our students with special needs.  Our goals include increasing academic achievement, social/behavioral growth and independence for each student that we have the privilege to work with.  The great majority of our special needs students are enrolled in general education classes with the support of resource center replacement instruction and/or in-class support instruction.    Specialized self-contained programs are also available for students with preschool disabilities, autism, multiple disabilities and behavioral challenges.

Our special education teachers are highly qualified in the subject areas that they teach. Our general education teachers differentiate instruction in order to meet the needs of students in their classes.  We have trained paraprofessionals that work under the direction of our teachers to provide support in classrooms and work with individual students.  Related services such as speech/language therapy, occupational therapy, physical therapy, counseling and behavioral consultation are provided depending upon the individual needs of the students.

Our Child Study Team members are dedicated professionals and are very responsive to parental concerns.  They evaluate students to determine eligibility for special education and related services, develop Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) for classified students and provide consultation and support to school staff.  If you have any concerns, please do not hesitate to contact them.  You can reach their secretaries at ext. 5217 for Ocean Road and Nellie Bennett Elementary Schools and ext. 2328 for Memorial Middle and Point Pleasant Borough High Schools.  Also, please do not hesitate to contact me at ext. 2414 for assistance.

Our district is a member of the Regional Professional Development Academy which provides professional development opportunities for our staff.  Workshops span all grade levels and focus on:  behavior management; best practices for instruction of special needs students; interactive technology for the classroom; autism and social skills.  Once again, I am pleased to offer parents in our district an opportunity to attend these workshops at no cost.  Please view the catalog of workshops to see specific information and follow the registration directions at:  http://www.lehsd.k12.nj.us

Our district has a very active special education parent advisory group called SEPAC.  The purpose is to provide input to the district on issues concerning students with disabilities.  The Executive Committee devotes a great deal of time planning meaningful and informational workshops during the year.  Please click on the SEPAC link to see the plans for the year .You can review information from previous workshops and view information on upcoming events, announcements, extra-curricular opportunities, etc.

I look forward to another successful year working with our outstanding staff to deliver exemplary services to our students.  We are most grateful for the support that we receive from our Board of Education and community to continue our work in special services.
